Background of the Study
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria (Gangi et al., 2023). PPH occurs when a woman loses more than 500 milliliters of blood after childbirth, and it can result from uterine atony, lacerations, or retained placenta (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Immediate and effective management of PPH is critical in preventing maternal deaths, and nurses play a pivotal role in early recognition, monitoring, and administering interventions.
Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital, located in the northern region of Nigeria, serves as a key healthcare provider, with nurses being involved in the management of obstetric complications, including PPH. Despite the importance of timely interventions, studies indicate that many nurses may lack comprehensive knowledge or confidence in managing PPH, leading to delayed interventions and adverse outcomes (Olaitan et al., 2024). Additionally, inadequate access to life-saving medications, equipment, and training may further hinder effective PPH management.
This study will examine the level of awareness and the management practices of nurses regarding postpartum hemorrhage at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital, aiming to assess current practices and identify areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Postpartum hemorrhage remains a major cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria, yet there is limited information on the level of awareness and management of this condition among nurses at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital. While nurses are crucial in detecting early signs of PPH and implementing life-saving interventions, there may be gaps in their knowledge or preparedness to manage the condition effectively. This study will investigate these issues, with a focus on identifying potential barriers to timely and effective management of PPH in the hospital setting.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the awareness of nurses at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital regarding the causes, risks, and management of postpartum hemorrhage.
To evaluate the management practices employed by nurses in handling cases of postpartum hemorrhage.
To identify the barriers to effective management of postpartum hemorrhage by nurses at the hospital.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness of nurses regarding postpartum hemorrhage at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital?
How do nurses manage cases of postpartum hemorrhage at the hospital?
What barriers hinder the effective management of postpartum hemorrhage by nurses?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with formal training in obstetric care are more knowledgeable about postpartum hemorrhage management.
The availability of medical resources and medications positively influences nurses’ ability to manage postpartum hemorrhage.
Nurses with more years of experience in obstetrics are more confident in managing postpartum hemorrhage cases.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the obstetrics and gynecology departments at Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variability in individual nurses' exposure to PPH cases, differences in clinical guidelines, and challenges in assessing the practical implementation of knowledge. The findings may not be generalizable to other hospitals with different resource levels or clinical practices.
